Having Fun with Art and Semantic Technologies
Through out my life I have been pushing boundaries on the technology side and a little on the music side of things.
My Work
I have been globally recognized as a cyber security researcher, systems architect, software engineer, data scientist and thought leader. https://owenmccusker.org/
I have been on the forefront of creating new ways of looking network security data and then solving challenging problems in cyber security for the government and private industry.
In the context of the SARS-COV-2 epidemic, I am also starting to apply my expertise to open source ideas and other solutions in in healthcare to facilitate the use of data science and information sharing. (go to –> trustcipher.com)
I am one of the initial thought leaders that introduced aggregate behavior analysis and its application to cyber security starting in 2006. I was recognized by the Department of Homeland Security being provided grants to build out the initial capability. I have given multiple lectures around the globe on the network security topics including at MIT’s GeoSpatial Lab and NATOs CCD CEO.
For over two decades, I have been focused on finding patterns in data creating novel tools and techniques that allow systems to fuse heterogeneous data sources creating common semantic understanding of the data.
As an entrepreneur and thought-leader, in 2006, I established an initial capability, Occulex, based on this concept at Sonalysts, Inc, which is still being leveraged to find threats and anomalistic behaviors not only in network security, but also in defending cyber-physical systems.
This work is still on going at Sonalysts!!
My Muse
There exist a number of important things in my life, and family is the top one, then music, rock climbing in the past, tinkering in the basement lab. Growing up sailing has been a go to activity for me, love catching the wind, striking a course, to see where I end up. My friends and I use to have a competition with our 16 ft HobieCat to see how can raise and hold the pontoon out of the water the longest, without pitch-poling. Rock climbing in my 20s and 30s gave me some raw perspective on problem solving, finding the next handhold. Poetry is a another muse, and I had the opportunity to study with Marilyn Nelson. Yet, music has been a source of inspiration and creativity throughout my life.
I started teaching myself guitar when I was young, learning classical guitar and jazz. I started playing a little cello later on in life a created an electric cello in my 30s. In 2008, I started a group called Experiments in Ambiance (EIA) that brought together images, music, and poetry (we called them soundscapes) in an improvisational context.
